Tiny home complexes are emerging as solutions to combat homelessness throughout the country, offering a cheap and efficient way to provide shelter amidst the national housing crisis. In some cases, living in a tiny home community serves as a stepping stone to help locals achieve permanent housing.

The Veterans Community Project (VCP) offers a village of 49 tiny homes to unhoused veterans free of charge, with extremely low barriers to entry to ensure all veterans in need can receive support. The tiny homes are fully furnished and those who live in the village also have access to health services, education, employment referrals and a sense of community. The VCP also helps veterans become financially stable and seek out permanent housing. Since the VCP opened, 85% of veterans who have stayed in the village have successfully transitioned to permanent housing.

The Golden Girls shelter has been providing meals, medical aid, and other support services for women with children who are experiencing homelessness. Since the Golden Girls living space opened, the program has served a total of 50 women ranging in age from the early 50s to late 70s. While at the shelter, staff members help them complete paperwork so they can receive Social Security payments, pensions, or alimony, and apply for affordable housing. They’re also provided medical care, counseling, and assistance finding jobs.

Affordable housing communities serve various low-income populations from seniors to veterans to minorities and families. Gaining a safe and affordable place to live — with rent capped at 30% of their gross income — can help turn people’s lives around as affordable housing communities like Hope Cooperative connects residents with services like healthcare, job, and life skills to get back on their feet.

Houston's effort to significantly decrease homelessness was successful due to the overhaul of its previous system which was disjointed, had too many services gaps, and often duplicated services. The new system provides concerted and seamless services in line with the Housing First principles. San Diego's lack of a cohesive plan to carry out the Housing First strategy has left it a lot less effective.

Washington D.C. has decreased the number of people experiencing homelessness through the implementation of its permanent supportive housing programs. The 'housing first' initiatives prioritize providing permanent housing to those experiencing homelessness and then connecting those residents to all the services they need to maintain that housing. There are no requirements of sobriety, employment, or medication to receive the permanent housing. The local government adopted the housing first approach in 2008 and has seen a decline in homelessness.

Eighteen "purpose built communities" across America have revitalized neighborhoods through a comprehensive approach that includes building mixed-income housing, providing better educational opportunities and offering health and wellness services. The model focuses on establishing a strong "cradle-to-college education pipeline" which attracts upper-income families and creates socio-economic diversity. Community centers, green spaces, and grocery stores all revitalize and bring new development to these neighborhoods. Rivercrest, a neighborhood in Montgomery, Alabama is seeking to replicate the model.

Conservation groups and land trusts that typically serve rural areas have begun integrating their missions and services in urban communities to battle environmental inequity and blight. In cities like Cleveland and Seattle, these land trusts address racial and economic disparities in the fight to preserve land, making sure to orient their renewal efforts in a way that positively impacts minority communities.

Denver’s Women’s Homelessness Initiative (WHI) is unique because it is the only church-based shelter program in the country that offers housing for women throughout the entire year. By giving women a place to stay off the streets, they are safer and have a better chance at getting back on their feet, aided by a subsidized housing program for formerly homeless people.
