Successes Against Female Genital Mutilation in Enugu State

In Phoenix, Arizona, a citywide tree-planting initiative is slowly increasing canopy cover to reduce the urban heat island effect in neighborhoods that need it the most. Residents pick between several varieties of desert-adapted trees, which are planted on their property by professional arborists, and take care of them with a provided kit.

In response to managing the homeless crisis, several Safe Rest Villages have emerged throughout the city. These are small, individual units on city-owned land, separate from nearby neighborhoods. There are currently seven active Safe Rest Villages in the city and they have created 350 transitional housing opportunities for the local homeless population.

Members of a water-insecure community mobilized to contribute a portion of their monthly stipends to repair and maintain the singular borehole providing water to the village. The community members — primarily women — also installed water taps throughout the community in locations like schools and mosques to ensure easy access to clean, safe drinking water.

Generous Design Africa works to reduce plastic pollution through upcycling and recycling. The group recycles plastic and makes products like rulers, cups, and buttons, that are sold for profit. Generous Design Africa also holds two monthly trainings to teach locals about plastic recycling and the dangers of plastic pollution. So far, more than 100 people have attended the training.

In rural areas where access to clean water is scarce and leads to increased waterborne illnesses, Smart Project is expanding safe water access by building wells in the community. The organization also provided the 30 households in the community with a 10-liter keg of water for cleaning, bathing, and washing dishes to prevent people from having to travel long distances to reach fresh water.

A citywide effort in Davis, California, that included information campaigns, opening testing sites, and free testing made getting a weekly COVID test a habitual part of life in the community. As a result, the city had lower positivity rates than the rest of the state.

The Water Access Rwanda project created a source of clean drinking water by establishing a network of pipelines and solar-powered pumps that help deliver purified drinking water to homes. Not only has the project provided a way for people to access clean water, but it has also provided jobs for over 60 people.

Curbing society's reliance on plastic has become a top priority on international levels. In light of this, Kenya took the most drastic approach and implemented a ban on all plastic bags enforced with consequence of jail-time and steep fines. After 8 months in action some are still finding this ban to be unjust due to cost infringements on businesses, but Nairobi’s shanty towns are seeing cleaner streets, healthier waterways and improvements in sanitation initiatives.
