Distilleries using high-proof alcohol to make hand sanitizer

As restaurants look at a myriad of ways to enhance the cleanliness of their businesses in light of the coronavirus pandemic, a distillery in North Carolina chose to shift their focus from gin-making to making and distributing hand sanitizer. The owners of the distillery are also training neighboring businesses "how to use the solution responsibly," and then donating bottles of the sanitizer after they complete the session.

Six months ago, a distillery in Ohio had the idea to start making hand sanitizer on-site, but because of the rapid spread of the coronavirus and the FDA changing regulations, the business has now fast-tracked the idea into reality. With only their first batch ready to donate, the distillery has already received over 1,000 requests for deliveries of the sanitizer.

Distilleries and pharmacies in Vermont have begun making hand sanitizer, in order to help mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. Although this does take away from the typical function of the businesses and doesn't result in revenue, the state is helping to cover costs of production so that all bottles can be donated to emergency responders, grocery store workers, and other at-risk people.

Many Chicago distilleries are utilizing their abundance of high-proof alcohol to create hand sanitizer to fill a gap in the market due to the coronavirus pandemic. While a portion of the product is being donated to first responders and frontline workers, this new business endeavor is also helping distillery owners keep their employees on payroll and their businesses open.

Thousands of people in Wuhan, China are volunteering to buy groceries, get medicine, and take community members to the hospital as a means to help those that need it during the coronavirus outbreak. Although the volunteers do not knowingly transport anyone diagnosed with coronavirus, the drivers wear protective clothing during their drives, which are organized by local neighborhood committees.

To save dozens of restaurants in San Francisco during the coronavirus lockdowns, a restaurant owner launched an organization that "provides monthly contracts to its restaurant partners to cook meals for underserved populations." The organization, which has 160 restaurant partners so far, helps fill the gaps left by the government-funded Paycheck Protection Program.

A tension fabric structures manufacturing company in Maine has repurposed their facility and transformed their local workforce to create grade-one medical masks for the local hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic. Because the company uses only U.S.-made materials, they have been able to avoid supply chain interruptions and now plans to continue making masks as part of their standard business model even after the pandemic passes.

What started out as a way to help provide face masks to those who needed them during the Covid-19 pandemic, turned into a job skill training opportunity for some refugees in Chicago. Although the funds earned from participating in the project don't necessarily provide a living-wage, the participants have been able to learn skills – such as learning how to navigate public transportation – that increase independence.

A collective of activists and anti-fascists named PopMob has transitioned from protesting right-wingers to producing hand sanitizer. They are working in collaboration with another group called The Rosehip Medic Collective and have produced more than 9,500 bottles (225 gallons) of homemade hand sanitizer. They work with groups like Sisters of the Road, Meals on Wheels, and Portland People’s Outreach Project to distribute the bottles to frontline workers and people experiencing homelessness. They also have a GoFundMe page that has raised over $9,000 to support their efforts.

Innovation labs, makerspaces, and fabrication laboratories are just a few of the entities that helping to address the shortage of personal protective equipment in hospitals by creating face shields and masks. In Madison, Wisconsin, the design for a custom-made medical face shield prototype created by Grainger Engineering Design Innovation Lab only uses three materials and has been approved by the university's infection control department. To help others join in efforts, the engineers made the design available online and it has now "been picked up by manufacturers around the world."
