A lifeline or 'dystopian'?: Schools open parking lots for homeless students and families

To help address high rates of homelessness among families, the San Diego Unified School District has begun to convert parking lots into safe sleeping sites. One of these sites, the Rose Canyon lot, provides a trailer for each family and also offers communal areas such as a shared kitchen, a small library, a space for dining and studying, and a charging station for electronic devices. According to the district, about 76 percent of families who have stayed at the Rose Canyon lot have gone on to find stable housing.
