    In 2018, The A&T Register, the online student-run newspaper for North Carolina A&T State University, the largest Black university in the country, conducted a media investigation. It examined the way local media wrote headlines that associated the university with crime. They examined headlines that fell into two categories; those that used the campus as a locator for crime, or headlines that based outdated affiliations. Then, the editor-in-chief, Alexis Wray, presented their findings to local outlets hoping to effect change. They did. Their investigation led to changes in future headlines.

  • How a project is training incarcerated people to become journalists

    In its first year, the Prison Journalism Project published hundreds of articles by more than 140 incarcerated writers in 28 states. The project provides journalism-skills training and then a platform for the work of incarcerated journalists.     CekFakta is a collaborative network that fights misinformation with around 6,000 fact-checkers from major Indonesian media organizations, citizens, and academics. The group holds training sessions to help journalists identify doctored images and misinformation, with the idea that participants will pass the skills on to their colleagues. CekFakta impacted 2019 presidential debates with large-scale, real-time, collaborative fact-checking that enabled a quick release of fact-checked information.   • How two nontraditional newsrooms in Vermont are winning readers

    VTDigger is an online nonprofit that publishes breaking news, policy reporting, and investigative work. A newsroom with 20 full-time reporters and editors generates about 8-10 stories a day that are relevant to residents' lives. The financially successful model is gaining the attention of those concerned about growing news deserts. VTDigger’s monthly readership expanded from 15,000 in 2010 to about 700,000 in 2020. Their success attracted financial support from foundations, institutions, and business people, including a “growth” fund that allows the outlet to continually invest in staffing and technology.

    To help students and others internationals who are living in the Netherlands during the coronavirus pandemic, a Facebook group was formed that translates news reports into English. Although messaging from the government is readily available in English, the ten university students who run the page are translating news broadcasts as a means of offering "contextual information about the crisis."
