The mental health of young people is a growing concern across the globe. In recent years, an increasing number of teens and young adults reported that they have attempted or seriously considered suicide. There are many potential factors that can contribute to high rates of depression, anxiety and other mental health needs in young people. Although journalists are covering how community leaders and government officials have responded so far, we see less news coverage about the strategies that are working and the ways young people are taking the lead in addressing mental health in their schools and communities. Therefore SJN is creating new resources, training, and programs to support solutions-focused reporting about youth mental health across the United States.
SJN's current projects in this area include the Student Media Challenge (michaeldavis@solutionsjournalism.org) and HEAL fellowship (juliah@solutionsjournalism.org).
