    Santa Ana College offered mental health services online for students dealing with depression, anxiety, and other issues exacerbated by COVID-19. Hundreds of students utilized the services, which include ten counseling sessions students are allotted each year. Sessions are conducted over secure connections using any device that can access Canvas or by phone. The Health and Wellness Center also reaches students with an Instagram account and weekly Zoom workshops. The 23 workshops cover topics like self-care, procrastination, tips to better sleep at night, and coping with rejection and loss.

  • Seattle's tuition-free community college program comes to the rescue during the pandemic

    In Seattle, voters approved to fund a program that gives public high-school graduates two years of free community college. Then, the pandemic hit the year it was supposed to begin. Educators and school officials quickly pivoted to accommodate students. Flexibility, student surveys, and tech-upgrades, are some of the things they did, and it worked. The program surpassed its enrollment projections, with 846 enrolled students. “That represents about one-third of Seattle Public Schools’ class of 2020. And 62% are students of color.”

    California Students Vote Project, a public-private partnership, encourages college students to vote. Covid-19-adjusted strategies include sending out multiple emails, using social media, and encouraging peer-to-peer contacts to inform students about how to register to vote and the ways they can actually cast their ballots. Group representatives also visit Zoom classrooms to share information and some students have organized virtual events, such as political trivia night, to foster student engagement.     California’s Glendale Community College normally operates a food pantry, called Food for Thought Pantry, for its students. Forced to close to slow the spread of COVID-19, it partnered with the Los Angeles Food Bank and the Glendale Community College charitable foundation to create a mobile food pantry for students and their families. Collecting food from farmers, wholesalers, grocers, growers, and distributors, they served a line of over 1,000 vehicles in April.
