When Neighbors Choose How to Spend Philanthropic Dollars

The République des Hyper Voisins, or the Republic of Super Neighbors, is an experiment organized by residents of Paris's 14th arrondissement to encourage community engagement, combat social isolation, and improve how the neighborhood functions. The group has organized mutual aid efforts, installed compost collection points, facilitated the launch of a new health clinic, and given residents opportunities to weigh in on local development projects.

In western New York, local bike advocacy groups have found power in numbers, banding together to gradually convince their governments to expand cycling access and communities to change their attitudes toward cyclists. By organizing mass cycling rides, which were at times disruptive by design, and other advocacy efforts, GOBike Buffalo and connected groups have convinced government and foundations alike to launch a major bike network.

Honor the Earth is an anti-data center coalition monitoring the construction of hyperscale data centers in or near indigenous land. Through their efforts, town halls, doorknocking, attending tribal council meetings and more, they’ve formed a community with people in agriculture and beyond, working to push back against data center construction and enact protections for communities. As a result of their efforts, the Tulsa City Council signed a 9-month moratorium on data centers, and the Seminole Nation also unanimously passed its own moratorium.

Residents of Montour County, Pennsylvania rallied opposition against a proposed data center by gathering information about the project through public records requests, showing up to board meetings and hearings in the hundreds, making T-shirts and signs with protest messages, and circulating a petition that garnered more signatures than the number of people that voted there in the 2024 election. County commissioners ultimately voted against rezoning land to let the proposal move forward, but the company behind it is still pursuing potential sites elsewhere in the area.

For the past year, community organizers in Baltimore have been going door to door to share Know Your Rights materials, as well as hosting trainings to help residents get involved in rapid responses against ICE operations in the city. Hundreds of people have been trained so far and the effort has led to the formation of about a dozen community-based ICE watch groups.

In one Baltimore neighborhood, residents have organized a grassroots network geared toward protecting the community from ICE raids. Through a Signal group, they communicate about ICE sightings, organize check-ins with neighbors, and help get each other connected with trainings from local organizations focused on protecting immigrant communities.

The Capacity Collaborative and Thriving Earth Exchange are working together to establish volunteer community science hubs to support environmental justice projects in communities around the United States. The organizations connect communities with scientists and experts who volunteer their time to help move their projects forward.

Moms for Housing reclaim vacant homes owned by investors to provide a place for single mothers to live. Advocating for housing as a human right, 13 organizers are currently living in these unoccupied houses and through civil disobedience, managed to negotiate temporary housing as they continue fighting for permanent solutions to the area’s housing crisis.

Through the Park Friends Network, local volunteer groups work to preserve public spaces in their neighborhood and communicate with the city about needed repairs or improvements. More than 140 Park Friends groups have formed in Philadelphia, with many hosting events such as cleanup days, school supply giveaways, and neighborhood meet-and-greets.

Organizations in politically divided states like Arkansas, Idaho and Ohio are hard at work to protect direct democracy through community organizing and education. These groups have rallied to pass measures like minimum wage increases, medical marijuana and have even organized voters to fail ballot measures like Ohio’s recent Issue 1.
