The mobile clinic helping indigent Nigerians stay alive

Hundreds of thousands of Nigerians with disabilities or limited access to affordable medical care have been enrolled in a new health insurance program that helps alleviate the financial burden of health services. Funding for the insurance program is split between federal and state governments, and while the quality of services can be inconsistent, proactive government outreach has boosted enrollment numbers.

The University of Arizona's student-run CUP women's clinic provides free preventive and primary care to uninsured Southern Arizona women. In 2025, they served 61 unique patients, a 35% increase from the prior year, and trained future physicians in community-based medicine and health equity.

The Nursing Heart mobile cervical cancer screening clinic uses visual inspection with an acetic acid (VIA) screening method to make cancer screening simpler and more affordable. Since 2011, the clinic has performed more than 4,000 mobile cancer screenings in more than 40 rural Guatemalan communities.

Following the national rollout of the HPV vaccine, teams emerged to manage critical components of the rollout, including supply chain management, education, training and data collection. Immunization specialists were also tasked with educating the public on vaccine-related myths and misinformation to assure people getting the shot was safe and necessary. With the help of these outreach strategies, the team managed to vaccinate 387,645 girls.

By December 2023, the nationwide campaign had vaccinated about 4.7 million girls; however, Osun continued to experience pushback, with citizens resisting the campaign due to misinformation and a lack of understanding about the vaccine’s significance. The federal government also joined in, adding the HPV vaccine to its routine immunization system, which helped about 4.7 million girls get vaccinated.

To help provide rural access to mental health care in India, ASHAs (appointed female healthcare workers) work in their local communities to identify and support women in need. By providing free listening and support services in addition to their medical care, ASHAs have helped thousands of impoverished women recover from depression.

Teams of Shasthya Shebikas, female community volunteers, are spread across the country providing door-to-door healthcare services to those in need who often struggle to access care. This community healthcare system, in partnership with the local government and other area NGOs, provides free or low-cost care to about 80 million people each year and has seen dramatic health improvements in terms of infant and maternal mortality and vaccination rates.

The University of Arizona's Commitment to Underserved People (CUP) program operates 12 student-run free clinics that provide comprehensive medical, mental health, and social support services to Tucson's unhoused and uninsured residents. In 2024 they served 525 patients while simultaneously training the next generation of community-minded physicians.
