Seed Savers Are Working to Preserve Palestinian Cuisine in Diaspora

Tiny Farms is making agriculture more accessible to people in Germany by allowing those interested in part-time farming to rent land for micro-farms that supply food locally. The company also gives farmers access to training, cultivation programs, seeds, and takes care of transport and organic certification.

To develop the next generation of producers, the Young Farmers Coalition non-profit is now pushing Congress and individual state legislatures to take a big step: forgiving farmers’ student loans.

Through volunteers and partnerships with other local organizations, the Sisters of St. Joseph Neighborhood Center distributes a month’s worth of food to families in need for free, as a large portion of the population is undocumented, unemployed, or otherwise ineligible for government assistance. The Center also provides services such as English language classes, a clothes closet, a diaper bank and assistance getting a driver’s license.

Sin Título started as a socially conscious clothing brand but has since evolved into a mutli-faceted brand that hosts mental health discussion panels and other events that aim to amplify marginalized voices and offer healing opportunities for the local Latinx population. One such event is their journaling series, the first of which, “Self Love Journal Club,” attracted about 100 people.

The mobile food distribution program by the Mind of Christ Ministries and Bethune-Cookman University has been feeding families since 2013. The program addresses local food insecurity while also providing university students with a meaningful way to give back to the community and earn required volunteer hours. The program estimates it reaches more than 200,000 people each year.

Watanda is a bulk-shopping system that helps ensure low-income families have access to meat during the Eid-al-Fitr celebration following Ramadan. In Watanda groups, members contribute money to a collective fund to purchase cattle that is then split between all the contributors. Amidst the rising cost of cattle, Watanda groups help ensure families have food on the table and can still participate in celebrations.

La Cosmopolitana Foundation in Colombia offers courses that teach people to live in harmony with each other and nature. The classes focus on sustainability and helping rural communities to work together to create circular economies. Small fees make the classes largely accessible.

A Catholic covenant in India, Helpers of Mount Rosary, promotes organic farming to locals and visitors from across the country on 40 acres of farming and training fields.

World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms pairs volunteers interested in traveling with farmers who need help with their farmwork to facilitate agricultural education and cultural exchange. The volunteers do farm labor at farms around the world in exchange for lodging and three meals a day for the time they are there.

Kids Who Farm, an initiative co-founded by a 12-year-old in the Phillippines, is working to teach young people how to start micro-farms and grow the waning youth interest in agriculture.
