Revolution in the Soil: How One School is Responding to Food Insecurity

In Phoenix's historically Black neighborhoods, community organizations have transformed vacant, heat-trapping lots into thriving urban farms. One initiative, Spaces of Opportunity, converted a 19-acre abandoned site into a community farm with 250 garden plots available. Spaces of Opportunity serves over 1,000 residents each month, and other community farming initiatives also help in providing food and jobs for participants, many of whom are formerly incarcerated or unhoused.

Chispa Arizona is working to encourage members of the Latino community to spend time outdoors. The environmental justice organization created “entry points,” or free outdoor activities each month that anyone can attend like hiking, community gardening, and park clean-ups. There has been some hesitation from people attending these events, but one member says these experiences are necessary so they can educate others about the importance of green spaces.

Across Philadelphia, people are turning to seeds to source their food instead of grocery stores and supply chains, which have been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Philadelphia is home to the Cooperative Gardens Commission, helping people across the United States practice safe gardening, providing mentoring for novices, and packaging and sending seedlings. It’s just one of many localized garden initiatives working to make sure their communities and neighbors have fresh, sustainable food.

Project Feed the Hood, a community effort to increase food access and security for lower-income families, has established gardens and pilot programs at ten schools in Albuquerque. The program originally aimed to convert lawns into gardens while giving youth an alternative to military recruitment. Now, it is run by community volunteers and also offers paid internships for youth. “We’re here to resist, to reclaim our food systems, our community spaces,” explains one of the project's dedicated staff members.

Community-led urban farms in Jakarta empower residents to transform underused city spaces like alleyways and campus grounds into productive local food sources. These initiatives often blend traditional gardening with community organizing, educational outreach, and sometimes smart technology or agricultural research to improve food access, enhance green space, and foster local resilience.

In the 2000s, Kerala's Santhapuram village pioneered the inclusion of women in mahallu, which are mosque area committees, after women demanded representation. Groups of women joined forces to form a grassroots initiative and advocate for more representation. This led to women gaining roles as elected councilors and executive committee members in mosque governance, and now 87 of the 600 mosques in the area include women in their committees.

The Foundation for a Better Environment partners with public and private schools across Nigeria to make waste reduction a part of the curriculum. It's focused on teaching youth to reuse, recycle, and compost through practices like making art and building gardens.

Tucson-based Mission Garden’s crops are thriving in a drought-stricken region because of the use of techniques and knowledge from the Tohono O’odham Nation to plant traditional local crops and native plants that can handle the lack of water.

An organic seed farm provides free education to Lebanese farmers on transitioning away from chemical pesticides and fertilizers into agroecology. The farm, called Buzuruna Juzuruna, is creating a network across the country and runs an heirloom seed cooperative with over 300 varieties of seeds to share for free.

The North End Community Improvement Collaborative's Local Foods Initiative utilized partnerships and grants to create an urban agricultural food system in an area of Mansfield, Ohio, that was classified as a food desert. They established space for community gardens and micro-farming, trained people how to farm, and formed a cooperative to sell produce in bulk.
