Pickups Mobilize Bolivia's Maternal Healthcare

Fistula repair surgery has become routine in the state of Kebbi in Nigeria thanks to the implementation of a health center that has made treatment easier for women to access. The center aims to address both medical and societal causes, by addressing underlying issues and patient-centered health practices.

Medical Missionaries of Mary is a Christian faith-based organization that works to complement the government's efforts of helping those experiencing vesicovaginal fistula by providing access to surgery for free. The group also addresses stigma around the condition and helps create a sense of community for patients.

Fabella Hospital in Manila is overrun with women in labor or recovering, it exemplifies the overpopulation of the area due to a lack of contraception and family planning access. The Philippines’ Reproductive Health Bill hopes to change this by allowing contraception to be available at public health places and allowing family planning services at these facilities.

Two regions within Kenya, Mandera and Isiolo, have made significant strides in reducing their rate of maternal mortality cases. Both counties employed similar tactics, such as improving facility quality, increasing the number of healthcare workers, and training local community volunteers to advocate for ante-natal care. Among other metrics, Mandera now records 588 deaths per 100,000 live births (down from 3,795), and Isiolo now has 57 facilities (up from 47) to make healthcare more accessible.

Being in a conflict zone, primary healthcare in the state of Borno in Nigeria has suffered in recent years. In response to the crisis, Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) centers provide Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to treat children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The centers also work in tandem with Community Nutrition Mobilizers (CNMs) to follow up with mothers to ensure that the children are taking the medicine, to educate them on malnutrition in children, and to offer other primary care provisions like immunizations.

Pregnant women in rural African villages tend not to seek medical services until they are in labour, but there are many services that should be performed earlier in the pregnancy in order to help ensure the survival of the mother and child. Bridge to Health Medical and Dental is a charity that brings temporary clinics to these areas and advertises their ultrasounds as an opportunity for mother's to 'see your baby' in order to entice mother's to come.

For women in rural parts of India, it is common to not be taught about the role menstruation plays due to the stigma that surrounds the topic. To bring both a better understanding and better hygienic practices to these areas, a startup has started using "locally-sourced banana fiber to create biodegradable sanitary napkins, which degrade faster if buried and don’t have to be burned" with the goal of increasing access.

A doctor in Papua New Guinea finds that involving men in family planning is the key to reducing maternal mortality.

In Kern County, where pregnancy-related mortality rates are more than double the California average and Black mothers face life-threatening complications at nearly three times the rate of white women, community doulas are working to bridge the gap between patients and the medical system. Since California expanded Medi-Cal coverage to include doula services in January 2023, more than 1,400 doulas have enrolled statewide, with active training pipelines building the workforce locally.

In 2025, Bauchi State launched the Impact Project to address Nigeria's maternal health crisis by deploying 100 Skilled Birth Attendants across 20 Local Government Areas, alongside free delivery kits and regular salary payments to increase access to professional childbirth care.
