Mumbai slum dwellers say 'I have to help' stop violence against women

The night shift janitor is an easy target. Working in isolation, cleaners across the country say they have been harassed, assaulted and raped by supervisors and co-workers while tidying office buildings, shopping malls and universities, as our investigation exposed.

The number of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada is high, so a group of Indigenous women formed an organization called Power Our Women (POW) to teach other Indigenous women across the country self-defense skills. Participants talk about their cultures, learn physical self-defense, build confidence, and learn situational awareness. Participants describe the program as healing but difficult. POW has now reached more than 5,000 women across Canada, including remote areas in northern Manitoba.

A space-based initiative called Global Fishing Watch is using satellite imagery and data to hold companies accountable to their promise of providing sustainable sourced seafood. While the volume of data and cost of obtaining it can be a challenge, the organization has partnered with key collaborators to help with the effort. Countries like Indonesia and Panama are working with them to stop illegal fishing.

Using GPS tracking on repeat offenders of domestic violence has shown to decrease repeat instances of such abuse. Of the 23 states that use such devices, those that use them in ankle bracelet form have the ability to not only monitor locations, but alert officials and victims when the offender leaves the designated boundaries. While the system has shown demonstrative success, some people voice opposition to such technology, citing privacy concerns.

Ensuring that cases of missing and murdered indigenous women are counted requires collecting data. In US and Canada, many cases of missing and murdered indigenous women remain ignored by law enforcement. In response, members of indigenous communities have undertaken data collection campaigns, including the creation of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women database.

Gillette, Wyoming is a small rural town that isn't connected to many resources, so that help for people who have experienced traumas can be difficult to access. With the implementation of the Gillette Abuse Refuge Foundation, however, that isolation is decreasing. Through digital connections dubbed as telemedicine, trauma survivors are able to connect with therapists to receive support and counseling sessions.

In November 2017 the Swedish army had their own #MeToo movement: "called #givaktochbitihop, which loosely translates to 'stand at attention and bite the bullet.'” A group of about 50 female sailors formed a group supporting one another called GRYM, an acronym that in Swedish stands for Community, Recruitment, Career guidance, and Mentorship. They support anyone who needs guidance in reporting or healing, and they normalize the subject of sexual assault in everyday conversation. Members of the Navy testify to how the group has helped bring about cultural change amongst the ranks.

The city of Eindhoven is piloting a handful of experiments to reduce alcohol-induced violence. They include "sound cameras" that trigger when someone is yelling, to cameras that measure crowd density, both of which prompt police to go to the affected area to investigate. Although the algorithms aren't perfect and sometimes there are false alarms, the city is still pushing forward with the goal of making the streets safer for all.

Health providers are well-positioned to identify and help those who have experienced domestic violence. Nepal is one of several countries training medical workers to identify abused patients and refer them to in-hospital crisis support services.

Using data collection and visualization, apps like SafeCity, HarassMap, and #WalkFreely are crowdsourcing locations where individuals have been sexually harassed or assaulted so that others know to take precautions. Some operate on a global scale, others locally, but what they all offer is a platform for people to share their story and hopefully prevent it from happening again. Such apps have led to action from community members, the media, and officials who have taken notice of the high rates in certain places and taken action.
