Ethiopia's Utopian Experiment in Gender Equality

Yuwa is a nonprofit organization that draws girls into education through sport, giving them the opportunity to play football while also providing high-quality instruction and skills training. The program serves about 600 students and has seen participants go on to study at universities, pursue coaching careers, and even play in the national football federation.

Beeyo Maal is a collective of women running their own businesses in Somaliland’s male-dominated frankincense industry. The group, which has about 280 members, allows women to make roughly five times what they were paid when previously working for exploitative companies.

A community-based cooperative of gender-based-violence survivors in Kasuwan Magani, trained by the NGO EWEI through its "Together We Can" project, has established a local safe space and referral network, which has improved reporting and response to sexual and gender-based violence in a rural Kaduna community.

Federal universities in Brazil operate on a quota system of affirmative action in which half of the available seats are awarded based solely on academic achievement and the other half are for students from underrepresented populations, including those identifying as Black, Indigenous, or disabled.
