Dual-language immersion: 'Only a matter of time' for New Hampshire?

The Keen Community Education Center offers free English courses for locals whose first language is not English. Along with improving their writing, reading, and pronunciation, students say they find a sense of community among their peers.

The nonprofit School on Wheels pairs students experiencing homelessness with tutors to help them catch up, and stay caught up, in school.

A pilot program, organized by the Consortium Partnership Network, seeks to improve school outcomes by shifting key decisions to staff inside the school, which schools remain under district supervision. The partially autonomous governance model is supported by the teacher’s union and has improved teaching-focused aspects as well as programs addressing the mental health, clothing, and food needs of students.

CHamoru, the indigenous language of the Mariana Islands, is endangered. In an urgent move to save the language, Chief Hurao Academy was founded, a nonprofit that offers a CHamoru summer immersion program, an after-school immersion program, and a CHamoru-language preschool. There are barriers to its success, particularly funding, but the response has been overwhelming and already the children can chat casually in CHamoru.

A school district in New Mexico is finding success with a dual language education program. A regular school day for an elementary school student in a Gadsen school district school might entail reviewing their math or history in Spanish or English, depending on the assigned language that week. “Our bilingual programs are not just for English learners, they’re for all of our students," Mayra Valtierrez, the director of language and culture at the New Mexico Public Education Department, said. "That’s something that’s unique to our state."

The Nez Perce Tribe and Lapwai School District are making a concerted effort to keep the tribe's language alive -- as part of an elective, every day students at an Idaho high school have the chance to learn the language from members of the tribe.
