After planting clams in Shinnecock Bay in 2012, scientists at Stony Brook University were able to reverse the trends of red tide in the coastal New York waters. The bay restoration project resulted in 400,000 square meters of seagrass regrowth and the local clam population significantly grew.

But scientists are working to prevent that erosion by replanting seagrass, which is an important plant in a marine ecosystem. Despite fishermen pulling up the seagrass with their nets, so far, nine acres of seagrass have been rehabilitated in the area.
Read MoreSEEDS has successfully scaled mangrove restoration from 5,500 to 415,000 saplings by training 17 women's self-help groups to earn income from planting and managing mangrove nurseries, creating a sustainable "ecology as economy" model that both protects communities from increasingly severe cyclones and provides dignified livelihoods without forcing migration.

Read MoreDue to its sustainable design, the Corolla Light Resort has seen far less seawater intrusion and damage to properties compared to other Outer Banks resorts, plus much healthier dune structures. With 450 privately owned and managed homes, over half of which are dedicated to vacationon rentals, coordinated limited development has led to some of the tallest dunes on the island and minimal erosion.
