RESTORE is a juvenile re-entry program offering supportive programming and guidance to intervene in cycles of crime and help more youth avoid the juvenile system and learn to make more positive choices. Already this year, RESTORE has served 344 young people through their workshops. Since launching in 2023, the program has helped 19 people graduate with their high school diploma, GED or a certification.

In California, the Community Justice Alliance created safe, youth-centered spaces focused on community-building and creative expression, including makeup artistry workshops and soccer meetups, to help immigrant youth arriving in the U.S. alone navigate feelings of isolation. These interventions aim to help teenagers build connections, reclaim their identities, and process difficult experiences in a supportive environment.

The Crisis Assessment Response Team (CART) model pairs mental health clinicians with a plain-clothed officer trained in crisis intervention to answer emergency calls together to increase voluntary treatment and decrease involuntary emergency detentions. One team that started working together in Feburary responded to 12 calls in 10 days, with only one resulting in a detention.

Waukesha County law enforcement departments are receiving Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training through the National Alliance on Mental Illness to teach them how to recognize and respond to people experiencing mental health crises by safely de-escalating the situations and connecting the people to resources and care, rather than jail and hospital stays. As of 2023, hundreds of officers in at least 19 counties have been CIT trained.

Project 1975: A Vietnamese Diaspora Commemoration Initiative is a public art installation to memorialize the Vietnamese who fought alongside U.S. soldiers in the Vietnam War, as this group is often forgotten. The memorial tells stories from the perspective of the Vietnamese, highlighting the impact of war on families and communities.

New legislation in Colorado will implement statewide mental health screenings, expanding existing programs in schools and health centers. For example, Glenwood Springs High School has had a screening program in place since 2020. The school's health center provides care ranging from dental exams to counseling and served over 2,500 students last year.

Several Louisville organizations are addressing mental health care accessibility for youth of color by offering therapy in community spaces like barbershops, libraries, and other familiar environments. This approach aims to reduce stigma and has also made mental health care more accessible by eliminating barriers such as cost and location. Many youths who had participated in the therapy programs reported feeling more open to discussing their mental health.

Play Cousins Collective helps Black youth build self-confidence and celebrate their identity and culture through hands-on activities, community building and access to free educational programs and therapy. Over 1,700 youth and families participated in the program last year.

The Kniffley Racial Trauma Therapy Model is specifically designed for people of color and focuses on affirming racial identity and providing a safe space to discuss traumatic experiences and gain a sense of empowerment. The model uses culturally relevant therapeutic tools and therapists who have been trained with it report a significant increase in how prepared they are to address racial trauma with clients.

The Lexington School for the Deaf provides wraparound family services including free American Sign Language classes and assistance navigating the health, legal and shelter systems, particularly for immigrant families. The gaps immigrant families face in accessing necessary services creates psychological distress, especially for children. But research shows community-based supports, like The Lexington School, help address those gaps and improve mental health outcomes.

The basketball academy in Queens teaches basketball and English language skills to Spanish-speaking immigrant children. The academy helps youth navigate culture shock, bullying and the lack of community they may feel when they first arrive in the country, while ensuring they still maintain a sense of their parents’ language and culture.

The student-led Youth Informed Club educates youth about the importance of voting and how elections work, engaging them in debates and informational sessions so they can make informed voting decisions. Participants of the Club leave with a better understanding of how to get involved with politics, as well as a greater sense of hope about the political landscape and their interactions with it.

City officials put up concrete barriers and road closed signs across 18 entry points to the Eastlake neighborhood in Birmingham. As part of the city’s Project Safe Streets pilot program, the road closures are intended to deter speeding, shootings, and other crimes.

Kings Kids Outreach provides youth with mentorship, tutoring, school supplies, counseling and other summer programs to help improve their academic performance, reduce absenteeism and protect them from growing rates of violence in the city. The group provides services to more than 2,000 children and, from the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years, reduced chronic absenteeism from 26.2% to 12.7%

The ZeroZero Foundation works to support youth with an interest in sports through athletic training, summer programming, counseling, field trips, scholarship opportunities, and connections to internships and job opportunities in the sports industry. The organization currently serves more than 100 children in the Birmingham area.

The Surge Project and EmpowerED Birmingham uplift local youth by providing mentorships, tutoring, healthcare resources, workforce development programs and educational opportunities in various fields. In the program's 2023 pilot partnership with the National Training Institute for Healthcare technicians, 32 of the 40 participants graduated with a phlebotomy or EKG certification, and 19 of them were local high school students.

The Creative Minds club provides a creative, supportive outlet for high school students amid a rise in teen homicides due to gun violence and racial tension. Students in the club meet to discuss their feelings, grieve and participate in forms of self-expression like writing and artwork to help manage their mental health.

Camp 4 All is a summer camp for LGBTQ+ teens, providing them with a safe space to be themselves, participate in summer activities and connect with their peers and mentors to build a sense of community amidst the increase of hate crimes and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation across the country.

Online gaming communities are helping people who live with chronic illness by providing forums for social connection and emotional solidarity. The multiplayer game Animal Crossing, for example, helped people meet basic psychological needs during lockdowns.
