The stories available on this journalism network can be really impacting and can be studied for their various important parts in history. When it comes to my own collection, the stories I have chosen are all connected to the overall theme regarding immigrants. However, the three smaller themes the stories connect to are those of; work, language skills, and community integration.
The story of how to help Mexican migrants refers to the issue of how immigrants, particularly Mexican immigrants, need specific information when it comes to seeking helping. This links to our course in comparison to the Flores family. As they were attempting to get visas, they had to get very SPECIFIC help and information that would move them forward. That is how this story relates as it expands on the idea that specific information is needed.
The story of International High refers to the issue of language skills as it is helping students, immigrant students that is. Again, referring back to the Flores family with their situation we saw how their age and integration impacted their education and language. This solution then is helping solve that transition hardship along with language barriers.
The story of translator refers to Mexican migrants in the U.S., indigenous people getting help through translators,. With that said, these stories connect to the overall 2150 class we have been a part of throughout the semester as I realized the impacts and consequences that immigrants can face. Here, indigenous migrants are being heard and are able to speak through translators where as otherwise they would stay quiet, referring to the issue of integration and language.
The story of culture and attracting migrants refer to the issue of how a person's color and culture can attract negativity and stereotypes while the other contradicts that in the way that some employers are seeking migrant workers, making it as migrants are deemed to serve the purpose of doing work and work only.
As a class we have learned about various immigrant stories and about different scenarios that immigrants face but by looking at these stories I understand more of the hardships and struggles that immigrants must face. The solutions have allowed me to gain insight on more struggles immigrants face along with attempts to ease things for them. When it comes to the solutions, they did give me a bit of hope but not the biggest as I am aware that there are things that go on with many people that go unnoticed. Therefore, although I feel a bit more optimistic it is important to recognize that there is the chance that many peoples' stories will go unheard of and their problems potentially not solved.
Two questions I have created are as followed;
When interviewing or talking with an immigrant, what are ethical guidelines that are followed?
Are there any impacts to someone's mental health when it comes to journalism on migrant stories?
