    After all 36,000 New York Police Department officers took required training in recognizing implicit racial bias, more officers understood how racism may increase officers' aggressiveness but there was no evidence that this awareness translated into a less racially disparate outcome in the numbers of people stopped and frisked. Since the protests of police bias that started in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014, most states have imposed mandatory implicit-bias training on police. NYPD's study is a rare measurement of the effects such training can have.

    Training more local police officers in the latest cybercrime tactics poses daunting obstacles. But a pilot project by New York Police Department found the next best alternative: teaching cops how to collect the information an expert will need to solve complex crimes involving the use of technology. Their Cyber Investigative Standards phone app walks an investigating officer through the questions to ask. The experiment showed NYPD that such crimes are indeed more local than assumed, and more solvable if tackled diligently and quickly.

  • Gun Studies: Permit Laws Reduce Murders; Red Flag Laws Cut Suicides

    New research on “red flag laws,” which allow the removal of guns police or courts deem someone is a danger to themselves or others, shows they have been effective at reducing firearms-related suicides when there is effective enforcement. However there is little data on how they affect murder rates, while gun permit laws requiring people to have licenses to buy guns do appear to decrease murder rates, according to another new study.
