    In the Navajo Nation, a territory the size of West Virginia that spans counties in New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah, people live in extreme poverty and lack access to clean water or electricity. A group called DigDeep is now serving the Navajo residents with large water storage systems and solar-powered pumps to bring water directly into the home rather than traveling miles away to carry water home. DigDeep is equipping nearly 300 homes in the area and has since received funding from Rotary International to expand their work further.

A collaboration between the Nature Conservancy, an environmental nonprofit, and farmers in the Verde Valley helped to save millions of gallons of water by encouraging the farmers to plant barley instead of corn. The farmers can sell their barley crop to a newly established malt house, Sinagua Malt. The malt house operates with the help of the Nature Conservancy, which has invested in the project.

The Center for Sustainable Landscapes, part of the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, received the first Living Building Challenge (LBC) certification. To achieve this, CSL advocated for changes to Pittsburgh’s laws on the use of public water utilities. CSL also had to seek out construction materials that avoided the use of harmful chemicals-a task easier said than done.
