    Amid a decline in students pursuing degrees in the liberal arts, Purdue University created the Cornerstone program, which integrates liberal arts concepts into the freshman curriculum, allowing students to learn about a wide range of subjects through the lens of classic texts. The initiative has allowed the university to hire more than 100 new liberal arts faculty and the model has already spread to more than 70 colleges across the country.

  • For these Native American artists, business opportunities arrive by bus

    In order to help Native artists, the First People’s Fund launched the “Rolling Rez Arts,” a shuttle bus that doubles as an arts center, cell, and business incubator. “Every culture has stories. They have art. They have ways of expressing themselves and telling about their history. And so that's why I think it's very important for artists here on Pine Ridge to be able to express themselves, to tell who we are as a nation of people, and that we have a history as well.”

    A nonprofit called Epicenter uses small-scale architecture and design projects to bring new life to Green River. The town of 950 people has experienced a loss of mining and other jobs. Ambitious young people typically move elsewhere to build their futures, but that may be changing. Epicenter repairs local buildings and is behind a variety of other projects such as a welcome sign, art installations, and a mountain bike trail.
