Across the United States, suicide rates are increasing every year, and funding for mental health care is not rising to meet this growing need. New York will be the first state to implement a successful European program called The Attempted Suicide Short Intervention Program (ASSIP), which consists of three counseling sessions with a person who has attempted suicide, and includes follow-ups for two years after entry into the program.

However there is little data on how they affect murder rates, while gun permit laws requiring people to have licenses to buy guns do appear to decrease murder rates, according to another new study.

"Sources of Strength" to Join Western State's Suicide Prevention Work

The latter is where police meet with community leaders and members of criminal groups to warn of harsh penalties for gun use, while also connecting people with resources to help them move beyond criminal activity.
