Virginia prepares to launch its first recovery high school

There are currently at least 43 active recovery high schools in 21 states, with two more expected to open this year. Noora Health’s Care Companion Program (CCP) trains nurses to deliver actionable health information to the families of hospital patients on how to care for them once discharged. The trainings are in local languages and are engaging and accessible, using formats like videos, animations, and pictures. With government collaboration, the CCP was able to scale up and is now used in 156 hospitals in India and four in Bangladesh. Noora’s staff continues to support families using WhatsApp and CCP interventions have shown to substantially increase proper care adherence and reduce post-discharge complications.

Funded by the Hear the World Foundation, Écoute-moi! provides audiological care in Chad. Working closely with children at a school for hearing loss, the group conducts audiograms to assess hearing loss levels, fits the children with hearing aids, and supports them afterwards with things like speech therapy. In order to create a sustainable model of care, the nonprofit has also trained four local audiological care technicians, the first in the country to provide services. Speech therapy is an important part of the follow-up support to help children speak after not hearing for years.

The Solitary Gardens project started in New Orleans and has been copied in multiple other places as a combination art exhibit and therapeutic link between incarcerated people and the outside world. People on both sides of the prison walls collaborate in pairs to design a garden that grows flowers and herbs chosen by the incarcerated person. The gardens match the tiny dimensions of a solitary-confinement cell. The healing herbs are used to help others, and the exercise overall gives incarcerated people a sense of connection to the earth, part of the project's prison-abolition message.
