'We exist': Public art project gives India's transgender community a voice

The Aravani Art Project is a project that works to raise the visibility and voice of the trans community in India. It does so by employing them to paint murals across the country (and even one in Sri Lanka) featuring slices of life as a trans person. It took time to build trust with the community at first, but eventually the people behind the project developed a system of idea conception to realization with their participants. Over time they have developed long-term relationships with each other, and the trans community is slowly becoming comfortable with having a public voice.

Germany's first refugee center exclusively for LGBTQ immigrants provided safe housing and services to people who otherwise might be subjected to some of the same discrimination and attacks in German shelters that they fled in their home countries. During the 2016 refugee crisis, Schwulenberatung Berlin, an LGBTQ charity, opened the 120-bed shelter with psychotherapists, lawyers, and support staff to help refugees find housing and jobs. To solve this, a number of parents formed a group called, "The Rainbow Parents." The group started in February 2017, and membership has been steadily rising since. They discuss the common issues that face them and how to solve them, and they meet regularly with supplemental Facebook and Whatsapp groups. Morris House is the only recovery program in the country that requires people identify as transgender or gender conforming before they enter the program. “About 90 percent of residents saw a decrease in substance use from the month prior to treatment to the last month of their rehabilitation. Additionally, 83 percent of residents received medical treatment, including preventative HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C care, and an additional 89 percent transitioned from use of street-grade unregulated hormones to medical-grade hormone treatment.”

Transgender people are using crowdfunding sites to raise money to pay for gender confirmation surgeries. “"It was such a surreal feeling. I was looking at the number in my PayPal," Moog says. It didn't quite sink in that the surgery was now entirely possible.” Foundations like the Jim Collins Foundation also help cover the costs of surgery. In 2017 the Jim Collins Foundation awarded 13 grants for gender confirmation surgery.
