Border Patrol agents begin stopping and questioning high school students near the border in Bowie High School. After one of the high school teachers finds out, the students began to organize, eventually suing border patrol for infringing on their constitutional rights. Ultimately, the high school students win a landmark civil rights case. “We couldn’t believe we took on the federal government and won.”

  • A Refugee Camp's Teachers Get Some Welcome Global Support

    Teachers for Teachers, is a US program that is educating untrained teachers in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. Around 550 refugee primary-school teachers have been trained through the program. Refugees form about 85 percent of the teachers in the camp. They have to deal with little resources, no training, and can teach up to 300 students. “I know how to prepare schemes of work and interact with my students. I can see results. Our students here are now performing well in national exams.”

  • U.S. Program in Greece Helps Refugees Become Students Again

    Thousands of refugees have settled in Greece, many of them want to continue their education. One program helps them do that, “Education Unites: From Camp to Campus, gives 200 scholarships to refugees so they can attend classes at one of three U.S.-affiliated colleges in Athens and Thessaloniki.”After finishing the program students earn a certificate that could help them attend a U.S. affiliated school. ‘“One door has opened, and we’re now waiting for other doors to open as well.”

    In Montana, schools and hospitals are in desperate need of teachers and nurses as brain drain leads young people to leave the state. In response, the state is working with Guardian Healthcare Providers to employ foreign nurses, mostly from the Philippines. Foreign teachers are also coming to Montana, and they need to meet clear certification requirements to be able to teach.     The Regional Plan Association is a research and urban planning organization. They are deeply influential in the urban planning in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut metropolitan area. The regional planning process has historically represented the needs of mostly white, affluent people, so this time RPA partnered with eight grassroots organizations, and involved immigrants from Long Island to take part in the regional planning process through focus groups, surveys, and discussions. As many as 1,600 people were engaged.

  • The Dutch Learn to Welcome Refugee Students

    In order to lower the dropout rate of Syrian refugees in Dutch schools, the Foundation for Refugee students launched a program called refugees@campus. The project pairs native Dutch students with refugees because they argue, connections are crucial to success. “Around 60 percent of refugees who complete a foundation program designed to prepare them for more strenuous study go on to enroll in a university. But 25 percent of those who enroll abandon their studies in the first year.” So far, 300 students have been paired.

  • When the American Dream Becomes Human Rights Abuse

    Non-profits in California worked together to set up a national network for undocumented immigrants to fight isolation and support legal aid. Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement (CIVIC) offers a free confidential hotline to report human rights abuses at detention centers and help families locate each other. CIVIC’s volunteers receive 14,000 calls a month from 210 detention centers in the United States.
