The Safe Space for Women and Girls plants neem trees around the Adré refugee camp with the goal of combatting the effects of deforestation while also providing purpose and hope for refugees living at the camp. Women involved in the organization are trained to craft products such as bags and jewelry from the neem tree oil and wood, with the proceeds of these goods reinvested into conservation efforts. So far, the organization has planted more than 300 trees.

Municipal ID programs such as IDNYC provide identification for residents who aren't able to access official government IDs, such as those who are undocumented or unhoused. The municipally-issued IDs make it easier for these residents to access local services and benefits and interact with officials, including law enforcement.

The Lexington School for the Deaf provides wraparound family services including free American Sign Language classes and assistance navigating the health, legal and shelter systems, particularly for immigrant families. The gaps immigrant families face in accessing necessary services creates psychological distress, especially for children. But research shows community-based supports, like The Lexington School, help address those gaps and improve mental health outcomes.

The Israeli Hug Center offers social support, group therapy, and robust programming for Israeli expats in New York City.

The volunteer-run Brave New Life Project is helping slaughterhouse workers in Colorado find less-grueling jobs that are meaningful and pay as well as the slaughterhouse. The nonprofit helps them create resumes, get transportation to new jobs, and access translation services.

The basketball academy in Queens teaches basketball and English language skills to Spanish-speaking immigrant children. The academy helps youth navigate culture shock, bullying and the lack of community they may feel when they first arrive in the country, while ensuring they still maintain a sense of their parents’ language and culture.

Nonprofits Mixteca, RaisingHealth, and Brave House are providing safe spaces for migrants to receive culturally relevant mental health care through workshops that incorporate cultural traditions and common mental health and self-care practices. The workshops help provide a sense of community and combat the stigma surrounding mental health in the immigrant community.

The UCSD-Alacrán Community Station is a sanctuary neighborhood for migrants fleeing violence in their countries of origin that allows them to participate in building a community and new life for themselves. The neighborhood houses about 1,800 people on three acres and features a health clinic, food hub and school.

Uniting for Ukraine allows U.S. citizens to sponsor Ukranian refugees, welcoming them to the U.S. to escape the war and Russian invasion of their home country. Over two years, the program has helped resettle 187,000 Ukrainians.

Latino churches like Iglesia Misionera Cristo Vive are acting as social service hubs for parishioners and members of the community, providing food, shelter, English language classes, trauma recovery and immigration advocacy.

The Refugee and Immigration Support Services of Emmaus (RISSE) helps migrants who have attained legal work status find jobs after the state eased requirements for asylum seekers looking for work, particularly in the state government. RISSE offers English language classes, immigration assistance and a case management program. In the past year alone, the total number of RISSE participants doubled.

Chicago’s federally-funded Asylum Seeker Emergency Rental Assistance Program is helping migrants move out of shelters by covering six months of rent.

Denver Public Schools’ Community Hubs provide wide-ranging support for students and their families, from language classes and GED programs for parents learning English to food pantries, financial education courses, and mobile medical appointments. The hubs have served more than 4,000 families since launching in 2022, with roughly 600 migrant families being served this year.

The OmniSalud program provides zero-premium health care coverage to low-income immigrants without documentation, helping make health care more accessible for those who normally struggle to get it due to their legal status. This year, the program expanded to 11,000 slots and hopes to continue growing.

To address enrollment decline in St. Paul Public Schools, the district invested in language and cultural programs that cater to local immigrant communities. After four years of implementing Hmong, Spanish, Mandarin, and East African language and cultural programs, student enrollment is now rising.

Immigrants Rising’s Mental Health Career Program helps undocumented state residents get into college and start careers as therapists and doctors. The Program’s goal is to increase the number of available undocumented therapists by making education easily accessible, thus creating more professionals who can better relate to other members of their community and provide more effective care.

The Kupalinka theater school is a space for adult and children refugees from Belarus and Ukraine to gather to learn how to run a theater and perform for the community. Theater classes help keep the culture and native languages of their homelands alive. The theater also provides a safe space for fun, creativity and connection, helping refugees manage the stress and grief of fleeing home.

Intercultural mediators are serving a small town’s growing Afghan community by helping attract new residents — particularly young refugees and migrants — to the region. These mediators help newcomers navigate hurdles like accessing documentation, jobs, schooling and health care in an effort to ease the transition period new residents often face.
