The Nationwide Photo Project Preserving India's Architecture

Ten Mile, a community in South Carolina settled by freed slaves after the Civil War, is fighting climate gentrification and flooding by preserving land through forestry projects, land trusts, and greenbelt initiatives. Saving green spaces this way maintains the character of the historic Black neighborhood while promoting flood resiliency.

Although many mutual aid networks have formed to serve a need during the coronavirus pandemic, the concept has been in practice for centuries and has "deep roots in communities of color." While these grassroots community efforts aren't always referred to as mutual aid, they have nonetheless come into existence to provide economic stability for communities and individuals when governmental structures have failed to do so.

Chicago students organized and, for the first time, convinced the city to rename a park in honor of Frederick and Anna Murray Douglass. The former Douglas Park was named after a Civil War era Illinois senator who advocated to expand slavery, and whose wife owned slaves. Not daunted by the city’s bureaucracy, the students canvassed in their community and gathered over 10,000 signatures for a petition to change the park’s name. The campaign, which began in 2017, was much harder and longer than the students anticipated, but by forming a coalition and continuing to speak out they persevered.

The history of Los Angeles, a farm town-turned metropolis, leads to the present-day food situation, in which the quantity of food produced is insufficient to feed everyone - yet food insecurity persists. Food Forward distributes produce that might not sell and brings it to partners across the city. Their food justice work has been supported by groups such as the Watts Labor Community Action Committee.

Residents in Vancouver, B.C.'s Chinatown have banded together to protect their neighborhood from gentrification. With collaboration and crowd-sourced activism ideas, young students and senior residents repeatedly knock down initiatives that would destroy the historic preservation and affordable housing in their community.

In one Baltimore neighborhood, residents have organized a grassroots network geared toward protecting the community from ICE raids. Through a Signal group, they communicate about ICE sightings, organize check-ins with neighbors, and help get each other connected with trainings from local organizations focused on protecting immigrant communities.

As part of the collaborative design process for a new memorial honoring Vietnamese immigrants who came to the United States following the Vietnam War, Vietnamese American students in the Asian American Studies Program at the University of Massachusetts, Boston are interviewing elders in their community about their experiences as refugees. The students say the oral history project has helped them gain a deeper understanding of generational divides among migrant families.

Project 1975: A Vietnamese Diaspora Commemoration Initiative is a public art installation to memorialize the Vietnamese who fought alongside U.S. soldiers in the Vietnam War, as this group is often forgotten. The memorial tells stories from the perspective of the Vietnamese, highlighting the impact of war on families and communities.

Front Porch Forum is a social networking platform that allows local community members to connect, whether it be to sell items, get together and even support each other during tough times. Despite varying politics and beliefs, the Forum helps bridge a gap during a time when divisiveness is at a peak. There are currently more than 250 forums across the state, specific to each community.

The Nez Perce Tribe is installing solar panels on homes and community buildings across their reservation with the goal of producing enough energy to replace the hydroelectric dams on the Snake River responsible for the diminishing salmon and steelhead populations.
