Ukrainian scientists invented a generator that uses organic waste from agriculture to produce cheap energy. This method can replace natural gas while disposing of agricultural waste in a way that doesn’t emit carbon dioxide.

In a collaborative effort between developers, power companies, and the government, a new apartment complex in Utah will be almost entirely powered by solar energy. The complex, developed by Wasatch Premier Communities, will work with Rocky Mountain Power to determine how to integrate such technology into the region’s electricity grid. This kind of development is gaining ground in Utah, and those in the industry hope to educate others of the benefits of going electric.

Companies in the shipping industry are using green hydrogen as “low-carbon” fuel to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions. It’s created by using renewable energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, then mixing the hydrogen with green methanol or ammonia.

The mail and package delivery company Deutsche Post uses electric bikes, trikes, cargo bikes, and delivery vans to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions related to last-mile deliveries.

Gree Energy helps food processors in Indonesia overcome the financial barriers to installing anaerobic wastewater treatment plants. These plants turn methane emissions into biogas to be used as electricity or thermal energy. The company plans the builds, finds uses for the biogas, and establishes revenue to fund the projects.

Virginia’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants by 12% because of the agreement’s carbon cap on utilities’ fossil fuel use that lowers yearly.

In London, two community-driven initiatives are working side by side to engage residents in sustainable practices. Energy Garden, a community energy cooperative, has created green spaces in rail stations offers residents community gardens, nature education, and solar power. Repower, the other initiative, works with residents to communally invest in renewable energy for low-income neighborhoods while also providing those neighborhoods with energy jobs and mentoring services.

European cities have implemented low-emission zones that gradually restrict older, polluting vehicles from entering designated urban areas, in an effort to reduce air pollution. While effectiveness varies by region, since implementing these zones, Brussels has seen a 36% reduction in nitrogen oxide levels over five years, and air quality improvements extending up to five kilometers beyond the zone boundaries.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough implemented a comprehensive strategy to combat winter air pollution from wood-burning stoves, including: a stove replacement program that swapped over 4,000 inefficient stoves for more modern, clean-burning models, promoting kiln-dried wood with lower moisture content that burns better and adopting low-sulfur fuel requirements. The efforts have cut particulate levels in half and sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere has been reduced by 50%.
