Solar Power Is Illuminating Maiduguri After Long Blackout

Solar-powered spinning wheels allow rural women to boost their work opportunities and incomes in an environmentally-friendly manner. About 4,000 women in various villages have been trained to spin using renewable energy, a practice that benefits both the community and the individual worker.

Solar-powered irrigation systems are helping Nigerian smallholder farmers reduce fuel costs by over 60%, extend their growing seasons, and increase crop yields, while also improving local air quality and reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions.

A first-of-its-kind renewable energy system in Hengbung, India, creates hydropower with solar pumps to prevent the community from experiencing prolonged power outages during extreme weather. At the same time, the project is increasing India’s renewable energy capacity.

A collaborative partnership among local and national organizations made it possible to install solar panels on 10 Greensboro homes for free. Moldova used government regulations and local installations of solar panels and biomass systems to respond to the Russia energy crisis, empowering local communities to create their own renewable energy cooperatives. These have helped increase the nation's renewable energy from 3% to 25% and reduce heating electricity costs in participating towns.

Women farmers in Bihar are installing and operating solar irrigation pumps and selling water to neighboring fields—cutting irrigation costs (often versus diesel), improving agricultural output, and generating a steady income.

A community solar project in a rural Michigan town is making energy more affordable for low-to-moderate-income households. Fifty community members and organizations subscribed to receive energy from and support the construction of a solar array. As a result, their electricity bills are about $300 cheaper each year, and the local utility reported fewer late payments.

The addition of solar power mini-grids provides electricity to 50 houses in the village, making it possible for residents to monitor their homes for snakes — something that’s impossible to do without light — and prevent fatal snake bites. The 50 mini-grids were provided for free and since their installation in February 2023, the village hasn’t reported a single snake bite case.

With funding and support from the Heritage Foundation Pakistan, a remote, off-grid village installed a solar energy system that supplies residents with free power and has improved their quality of life.
