SkyTruth: Using the Power of Satellites to Hold Oil, Fracking and Fishing Companies to Account


SkyTruth, a nonprofit environmental watchdog organization, is using satellite imagery and remote sensing data to identify and monitor the impacts of human industrial activity on the natural environment. Their service has been used by NGOs and members of the public to keep an eye on oil spills, natural gas fracking, and illegal fishing networks. “Things that used to go unnoticed are now being noticed,” says founder John Amos.
