Nigerian Medical Students' Association: Active Citizenship for Health Improving Malaria Prevention and Treatment Awareness

Liberia's community health worker program taps residents of rural areas to receive training in disease surveillance and basic health care, creating a network of on-the-ground professionals to report potential outbreaks before they begin to spread. The program has contributed to more rapid treatment of malaria cases, with 71 percent of cases treated within 24 hours in 2021, and has significantly increased the number of rural residents with access to care.

China has seen success in containing the coronavirus through strict governmental oversight but when the virus made its way to Vietnam – a country with similar rule – the government enacted more transparent approaches and relied on social networks to mitigate the spread. Although it is yet to be seen if one methodology was superior to the other, Vietnam's strategy of accountability and transparency has "proved to be effective and furnished positive results."

Thousands of people in Wuhan, China are volunteering to buy groceries, get medicine, and take community members to the hospital as a means to help those that need it during the coronavirus outbreak. Although the volunteers do not knowingly transport anyone diagnosed with coronavirus, the drivers wear protective clothing during their drives, which are organized by local neighborhood committees.

Racing to contain the Zika outbreak, Brazil has deployed an army of health workers to eradicate mosquitoes. But in a country where standing water abounds, giving mosquitoes endless opportunities to breed, the task is daunting.

Facing a measles outbreak in a vaccine-hesitant community, Shasta County public health officials contained the spread by routing their response through trusted local intermediaries, including school principals, church leaders and clinic managers, rather than just relying on government messaging. The approach combined rapid contact tracing with a non-judgmental communication strategy designed to work with, rather than against, residents skeptical of government authority. Within two and a half months, the outbreak was declared over, with only nine confirmed cases total.

The National Council for Mental Wellbeing's Mental Health First Aid for Rural Communities trains local residents to recognize mental health warning signs and provide critical support until professional help arrives. The program equips non-medical community members with skills to spot crises, have supportive conversations, and navigate people to appropriate resources. In central New York alone, more than 6,000 people have been trained across 10 rural counties, providing life-saving interventions, particularly in areas where emergency services are hard to access.

Over 2,000 community health workers are distributing rapid diagnostic tests to pregnant women to help diagnose and treat malaria. The health workers also refer patients to further treatment as needed. In 2022 alone, they treated over 130,000 people.

Boda boda motorcycle taxi riders have become frontline HIV health advocates through the LISTEN (Local Innovation Scaled Through Enterprise Network) Community of Practice. Trained in HIV self-testing, prevention methods and counseling, the riders hold monthly awareness days, operate two community testing stations, and distribute preventive items to the public. Since the initiative began in 2019, the association has reached approximately 10,000 people, referred 2,000 for antiretroviral treatment and tested around 400 people per month.

The Care Now Clinic, established by Behavioral Healthcare Partners of Central Ohio, offers early crisis intervention services for those ages 12 and up, helping bridge the care gap between emergency rooms and waiting to see a physician. The group also recently launched a mobile crisis unit to even further expand access to care. Research shows these models cost less, reduce emergency room visits and make handling chronic conditions more manageable.

Interventions like annual mass administration of medicines, increasing clean water access and educational efforts are being deployed across several states to help curb the prevalence of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) like schistosomiasis. These interventions have been active since 1995 and through the help of partnering with other local and international organizations, like the German E-Merck, rates of NTDs like schistosomiasis have dramatically decreased over the years.
