Nigeria's higher institutions entrepreneurship syllabus fail to curb joblessness

Career Advance, and the Warren Village, are two anti-poverty programs built on the “two-generation model,” which “focuses on providing coordinated, high-quality services to both children and their parents under the umbrella of one program.” Prior efforts only focused on children. The approach seems to be a successful study. The Career Advance program found that sixty-one percent of participants earned a post-secondary credential after one year in the program, compared to just 3 percent of those in the control group.”

Evanston's free Mental Health First Aid training program has equipped 169 residents with skills to recognize and respond to mental health crises. This helps distressed individuals connect to professional resources more efficiently, though challenges remain in ensuring adequate follow-up mental health services are available in the community.

Project PRESS, which stands for Preparing Responsive and Effective School Social Workers, addresses the social worker shortage in schools by motivating social work students to pursue careers as school social workers providing them with the proper training to do so. It’s a year-long program that focuses on staffing historically Black and low-income areas, and has placed 22 social workers in schools in its first year.

As an alternative to deforestation-linked livelihoods, a community woodworking studio in Brazil's Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve is turning fallen trees and dead wood into handcrafted art and household items. In its first 6 months, it generated nearly $10,000 in sales and provided supplemental income for 18 local families.

A new program through Adams State University hires incarcerated professors to teach in prison bachelor’s programs, providing them training and income while giving more people access to education behind bars. Students report that they prefer learning from someone who understands their experiences and is available to connect with outside of formal classes.

Despite it being a historically male-dominated field, women in Kashmir are learning copper smithing to become both socially and financially independent. Women who have mastered the skill then teach it to others, allowing more and more women to not only learn a valuable skill, but to secure income to support themselves.

San Francisco's Black Early Childhood Educator pilot program covers tuition and provides stipends for Black students, as well as support from a case manager and necessary supplies such as laptops. Since the program launched two years ago, 62 participants have received their associate teaching permits from the City College of San Francisco.

To combat unemployment, the Girls2Women Initiative runs 6- to 12-week training programs for girls and women in underserved communities in Nigeria. During this time they learn skills they can use to find a job or start their own business in industries like graphic design, decor, and tailoring.

“Grow your own” programs, like Reach University’s, are working to address teacher shortages, particularly in rural areas, by recruiting school employees who don’t have college or education degrees and giving them a chance to earn an undergraduate degree in education at just $75 a month. Participants take courses online and take 15 hours out of their work week to spend time observing and training in classrooms. So far 84% of all parishes across the state have signed up to take Reach trainees, which could put a significant dent in the statewide teacher vacancy issue.

In an effort to increase diversity in the forestry and fire industry, the U.S. Forest Service partners with several historically Black colleges and universities to run an on-site fire academy that gives students the credentials to start a career. Participating students learn fire fighting and forestry practices in class, then put them to use during instructor-supervised prescribed burn demonstrations.
