Cross fostering helps Mexican wolf population boost genetic mix

A unique partnership between the U.S. military, conservation groups, private landowners, and state and local governments has allowed the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker to grow in numbers. By working together, they’ve been able to protect the forests near military bases where these birds live. Environmentalists are worried about efforts to remove the birds from the endangered species list, saying their work isn’t over. However, this partnership has become a model for other conservation efforts throughout the United States.

Bucking the worldwide trend, Nepal continues its successful fight against poaching, thanks to a multilayered system of information gathering, enforcement, and swift justice.

After a five-year effort to reintroduce the alala bird on Hawaii’s Big Island failed, conservationists are looking into releasing the nearly extinct Hawaiian crow on a different island. Of the 30 birds released in 2016, only five survived. Another predator known as the Hawaiian hawk killed off some of the birds. Releasing the crows on Maui is a temporary solution, but could allow them to learn skills to survive with other predators.

Arizona’s Game & Fish Department is taking a proactive approach to chronic wasting disease (CWD), a neurodegenerative disease found in deer, elk, and moose. The department works with hunters during hunting season to test dead deer for the disease, which has yet to spread to Arizona. It has also banned deer farms and the transportation of whole deer carcasses into Arizona from other states, citing that it’s easier to keep CWD out than control it once it’s inside state lines.

Africa's wildlife have made headlines time and time again, as species find their way closer to extinction. There are some pockets of the continent, however that have provide refuge for species and allowed them to not just populate, but thrive. Recognizing this, a group known as African Parks found a way to use these growing populations to repopulate other areas of the continent by transporting animals to newly protected areas.

New Zealand has an ambitious initiative in place to eradicate millions of evasive species by 2050, but that doesn't mean researchers have halted short-term actions to stabilized species and avoid extinction. The kakapo, a parrot-type of bird, is a prime example. While efforts have been taken for over a century to save the bird, most recently researchers have succeeded in not only moving the kakapos to three predator-free islands around the country, but also in aiding breeding efforts by monitoring the growth of chicks.

The local tribe in the Pueblo of Santa Ana in New Mexico has been working on restoring their land for some time in order to maintain the health of the ecosystem and their culture. They've since expanded through collaboration efforts with state and local government that have helped reintroduce species and further restore the area.

Threatened wildlife co-exists with poverty stricken communities who inhabit the Arizona-Mexico border region. Borderlands Restoration's conservation scientists are hoping to alleviate poverty while repairing the local environment by providing jobs that help preserve and renew the environment.

Purnima Devi Barman has been building trust and working with various community members to save a stork species called the greater adjutant in India. Because of her work, she has inspired more than 10,000 women and their families to help in bird conservation activities and the number of storks in the region has increased to as many as 1,200. This type of community approach could be used in other places as a model for wildlife conservation efforts.
