Converting Businesses to Cooperatives Just Got Easier

As of 2017, more than 130 California-based construction companies have created Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP) as a way to ensure the future viability of a small business and ensure stability and buy-in for their employees. While ESOPs are rare, support for the strategy is growing - and the model has both progressive and conservative champions who see it as a way to make business run better.

The State Early Learning Alliance is a membership organization of about 30 independent child care centers that pools resources to save money on essential services and free up time to focus on providing high-quality care. In conjunction with face-to-face organizing, and more positive perceptions of unions from the public, digital communication such as social media and text messaging has led to an increasing number of unions. The current pro-worker political climate and the transparency of poor working conditions through social media have also contributed to the rise in unionization.

The Cherokee Nation had a hard time sourcing personal protective equipment for health workers, citizens, and others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tribal leaders decided to use a portion of the CARES Act funding to create their own manufacturing facilities to produce PPE for both Cherokee Nation citizens and non-citizens. Though still in the testing phase, the facilities are already training 10 people and plan to employ a minimum of 25 people. They will make about 200,000 surgical masks a day and will also produce N95 and N99 masks that they will distribute to healthcare workers and other organizations.
