After saving their forest, these Kenyan women now catch and hatch cash through butterflies

Women villagers in Kenya used to clear forests for firewood and charcoal to sell, but now they protect the forests to raise butterflies that they sell for income. They sell the butterflies in their pupae or chrysalis forms to people in Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States that use them for decoration. More information is needed to ensure they are harvesting the species at a sustainable rate, but the community members are earning up to $100 per sale, which often goes to their children’s education.
