Mia Treboni-Hogan

Denison University

This collection focuses on the ever-growing concern of food waste in the United States, specifically in the education system. Included are multiple examples of many different school districts across the United States attempting to make the change for a more sustainable environment. There are accounts within numerous education levels, from elementary schools to collegiate institutions; even at Denison, food waste is a problem the university is working to tackle. In addition to the troubling problem of food waste in this country, the other end of the spectrum lies within the issue of food insecurity. The collection touches on many techniques to help decrease food insecurity levels. It was essential to pull articles from multiple regions within the United States to establish this as a national issue. Many are working to address this problem, from Ohio to Arkansas to Wisconsin; some strategies established are share tabling, composting, buying locally grown produce, and impressive inventions such as the Food Cam. While implementing these techniques solely in the school system will not solve the problem, it is teaching the youth of America to be more conscious of portions and easy, eco-friendly means of disposing of food.
