United States Politics: The Tragedy of the Commonsense Morality

Presley Scholten

Student (NOT Journalism School)

The US political system struggles with the “Tragedy of the Commonsense Morality” (Greene, 2013) where different associations of citizens have conflicting ideas of a perfect society. This collection focuses on how different activists are helping United States citizens come together to have their version of a moral society heard. Tina Rosenberg analyzes how various forms of protest are used to speak about one vision for a moral society while Maria Esquinca observes how activist in Texas are promoting the vote to communicate. Both of their articles discuss overcoming a feeling of being silenced in the political sphere which is part of the solution to the Tragedy of the Commonsense Morality. However, Allison Pond provides an example that takes solutions to this Tragedy to the next level by writing on an organization in Utah that focuses on facilitating dialogue between people with different views.
