Solutions journalism is news about how communities and organizations are responding to social and environmental problems. This collection contains solutions stories that highlight innovations in the food sector that typically fall outside the realm of individual behavior change. In Peru, indigenous farmers reinstalled 1,200 year old technology to hydrate wetlands and increase crop yields. In Kenya, farmers are maximizing their yield and defending the land from climate change using conservation agriculture techniques. A French startup is developing an environmentally-friendly fertilizer out of human urine, offering farmers an alternative to chemical fertilizers which pollute waterways. And in the Czech Republic, a project is combining cryptocurrency mining and open-source technology to make sustainable agriculture scalable.

Agricultural production (crops and livestock), food preparation and consumption, and food waste are all parts of the food sector that present opportunities to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. Indeed, this essential human activity is responsible for a major share of greenhouse gas emissions. Livestock production alone is responsible for about 1/8 of anthropogenic emissions, and land clearing (mostly for agriculture) is the source of another 1/8 (IPCC, 2014).
