Reducing, reusing, and recycling are vital for the prosperity of the Earth. Humans create ridiculous amounts of garbage everyday. Most of which takes hundreds of years to fully decompose. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States uses over 100 billion plastic bags per year. When not disposed of properly, they can take up to 1000 years to fully decompose. Only 9% of all of the plastic ever created has been recycled according to BBC News. In order to combat plastic waste scientists are researching new ways to turn plastic into oil. Chemical recycling has been looked into in the past but due to the high energy requirements and the fact that producing new plastic is cheaper than chemically recycling old plastic this has not been prioritized. Felix Bock and Shane Price have both created businesses from reusing waste. Bock started by taking used chopsticks from local businesses and making them into furniture. His company, ChopValue has saved over 70 million chopsticks from entering landfills. Price is a salonist from Boulder, Colorado. He realized that there was a lot of hair and product waste everyday that was being thrown away. His organization has spread across the country promoting the proper recycling of specific hair products and the donation and reuse of cut hair. In Greece, the island of Tilos has adapted a three bin waste system. The first is for organic matter, second for paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass, and the last for anything else This allows the island of only 500 residents to recycle 86% of their trash.
