Ryan Kuwada: Immigrant's Rights

Ryan Kuwada

Student (NOT Journalism School)

Each of these stories depict the challenges that immigrants face. One of the stories talks about the sanctuary policy of each state, something that we have already talked about in length. The second article talks about how some states are providing different ways for immigrants to prove their identity. The last article is describing the horror or the experience of having ICE hunt after you. All of these issues describe the different stages of rights that immigrants have in this country. Whether it is describing the treatment of illegals, aiding resident immigrants or the arresting of immigrants; each of these stories deal with how the immigrants are treated. The second article, about issuing immigrants with ID cards is a useful policy that can help several immigrants pursue their own interests. California did this several years ago, and it didn’t really provide a massive social change, however it did help make undocumented immigrants feel more entitled and self-assure. The solutions to these problems do give me hope. In my mind there is a greater sense of fear at the moment, and after enacting some of the solutions in mind, that fear is lessened. Equal protection under the law is key for the immigrants and enacting these solutions that I have in mind will help.

I believe that the context of reception for my solutions will be much appreciated in the states that already have sanctuary cities and loathed by those that deny sanctuary. Since I was intending on increasing the civil rights of illegal immigrants and limiting the discretion that ICE has, I would assume that ICE would be infuriated, as well as other member of the law enforcement community. I would imagine that social advocacy groups like the ACLU would appreciate the policies that intended on enacting for the rights of everyone.
