Description

The focus of my collection is solutions to plastic waste around the world. All of the articles and the video showcase positive solutions for dealing with plastic waste. For example, in Egypt, fishermen are trading plastic water bottles for cash, and in England, they have lowered their plastic bag usage by 59% in a year. A zero-waste store has completely rethought packaging. Now, they either sell items with no packaging at all or in reusable containers, to minimize their plastic waste. Another article explains that in the United Kingdom, a company is taking all kinds of plastic and turning them into oil. Their goal is to process 80,000 tons of plastic per year which would be huge. One major theme from the stories I have assembled is that anywhere in the world, no matter who you are, you can make a change. A teenager in India has created a biodegradable pot that will combat the plastic waste crisis that comes from the planting of trees in India and it only costs 27 cents to make. Another theme that I have seen is that people all over the world are finding extremely intelligent ways to minimize plastic pollution. A few of the interconnected social and environmental issues that come up repeatedly in connection with plastic waste include health of humans and animals, climate change, and economic failures. Plastic pollution can cause health problems in humans and animals around the world and also worsen climate change. Pollution can also affect the economy because if an area is very polluted, tourism will go down causing local businesses and things to lose business.
