The Switch to Renewable Energy: A Step Towards Sustainability

The collection is focused on resources that highlight the environmental benefits of renewable energy and the process of switching to renewable energy. Currently, about 80% of the world’s energy usage is powered by fossil fuels. Switching to renewable energy sources such as wind power, solar power, or hydropower would eliminate the negative impacts of the burning of fossil fuels while also aiding in our overconsumption fears. Fossil fuel power is driven by gas, oil, and coal which is a finite resource, therefore eventually it will run out; despite our large reserves, we are expected to start completely exhausting these resources within the next 50 years. That begs the question of why we aren’t using renewable resources if they are a much better alternative. It is not as easy as it seems, which is shown in these articles. A common challenge people face is the expense. Renewable energy is very costly to establish (purchasing, transporting, maintaining) compared to fossil fuels which are much easier to fund. Some renewable energy sources, specifically wind energy, also have geographic limitations. A recurring theme is the shift away from primarily fossil fuels to renewable energy and the challenges in doing so; the articles in this collection showcase individuals, communities, larger groups, government agencies, and beyond who strive to implement a new energy system revolving around renewable energy methods, or who have already done so. Unfortunately, there are not too many models of 100% renewable energy usage, however some of the articles linked display great examples of how people have been adopting a new way of living by switching to renewable energy sources. Overall, this collection showcases the various stages of the shift to renewable energy through different examples of people making the switch.
