This collection is focused on looking at various sources of water pollution and evaluating solutions to address these issues. Most of these articles are addressing either marine plastic pollution or chemical pollution, especially focusing on various problems and solutions around the world. For example, the main chemical pollutants discussed in my collection are perchlorate and nitrate. Scientists have been coming up with new ways to reduce the amount of these chemicals in the water, such as utilizing bacteria that can destroy perchlorate and turn it into harmless chloride and oxygen, and restricting the location and amount of nitrogen that is applied to farms through fertilizers. Marine plastic pollution is the other main form of pollution in this collection. The main solutions shown in the articles are recycling the plastic into new products, having financial incentives for fishermen to collect plastic waste from the Nile, and inventing new technologies (like the TrashBoom founded by Planet Fischer) in order to easily collect waste from our oceans. Many of these articles focus on innovation and finding a wide variety of new ways to solve different environmental issues. Many of the current media platforms display mainly negative news regarding the worsening effects of climate change and other environmental problems. It can be very stressful and overwhelming for consumers to only see the negative in these situations. However, this collection on water pollution provides a more optimistic perspective on these issues, focusing on new changes and solutions we can use to improve the state of the environment in the future.
