Through numerous education approaches, the attached articles and outside sources, this collection explores different educational approaches, all of which point to a bigger theme: the effectiveness of education and environmental appreciation among the general public to promote climate change mitigation. The methods of education vary, from inside of the classroom to wilderness hikes, but all of the methods preach appreciation for the environment, which in turn motivates students to act in environmentally conscious ways. The locations of the programs also vary. One article explores an educational program in rural Utah, where students are taken out in nature to learn the science behind their home, in an effort to teach them the value behind protecting the environment. In another program, Philadelphia-based artists and educators tackle the rising issue of urban heat by using art as a medium to teach inhabitants about climate change and risk management behavior. Through these articles and outside sources, various socio-environmental issues present themselves. The way that public education discusses climate change is not through appreciation or respect for the environment, but through a strict discourse that is extremely limited and underdeveloped. Therefore, through using alternative education methods, environmental education has the potential to influence a new wave of environmentally conscious behavior.
