1. Here are some key points that I took away from these stories
- US energy systems puts about 5 billion tons of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere every year
- Carbon capture (catches CO2 and stores in safely underground)
- 30% of waste in Paris is organic waste
- When food waste is mixed with landfill, it produces methane, which contributes to global warming.
2. The two stories I learned about were about organic compost and carbon dioxide, which both tie in with global warming. Organic compost is broken down organic matter, which can used for gardening, farming, landscaping, and more. It is mostly composed of scraps from the kitchen, which include vegetables, leaves, and anything else that comes from plants. Organic Compost has many benefits to it. It can adds more nutrients and improves sandy soils and soil texture. This ties in with global warming because as mentioned in the story, mixing this with landfill can produce methane. It is important as people living on this earth the try to have our compost separate from our landfill. Carbon dioxide is constantly emitted everyday through living organisms and burning fossil fuels. It has reached it highest levels it has ever been on earth's atmosphere. This is cause many changes in our atmosphere. Some examples include, temperatures rising, increased extreme weather events, sea level rises, ice melts, and more. I really liked the idea of the carbon capture, but like mentioned, it would take a lot of money, time, and resources to make a big impact on the earth. In the mean time we should be helping decrease burning fossil fuels however we can.
3. Both stories were very interesting. I am always interested in learning about the earth, and the ways people are harming it and the was people can help it. I did learn new information and gained new understanding from the "Tiny Blue Bubbles Designed to Help Save the Planet". I did not know much about organic compost, but I was able to learn more about it, and hopefully be able to apply what I have learned in my life.
4. A story that I enjoyed, but was not my top choice to share was "Climate change: United Nations wants sporting bodies to do more". It talked about Uefa scheduling Euro 2020 across the UN. People considered this a major problem because it is going to bring a lot of carbon footprint.
5. I would like to share that I was able to gain a lot of insight on something I do like to learn about. Every story I watched or read was meaningful, and I really did enjoy this website.
What are three to six key points or impressions that you will take away from these stories?
Write a 200-word reflection that engages, analyzes, critiques, expands upon, and/or questions what you read or listened to.
Share your reflections on your experience reading, watching or listening to the solutions journalism stories. Did you learn new information; gain new understanding; see things with a different perspective than you had in the past?
Did the stories reinforce an idea or thought you'd previously had? Did you meet new people, or learn about opportunities you were previously unaware of?
Were there other stories this week that you’d like to give an “honorable mention” -- that you enjoyed, but were not your top choice to share?
