Although Germany has reported over 50,000 cases of coronavirus, the country is seeing a lesser death toll from the pandemic as compared to other countries. Like other countries working to contain the spread, Germany was quick to enact widespread testing a persistent contact tracing, but the country also implemented early measures to protect the more senior residents which has kept the infection rate low for this highly susceptible population.

Although Germany has a high amount of coronavirus cases, their death toll is less than comparable countries which can be attributed to widespread testing and a prepared health care system. The hospitals have been able to avoid a "mass influx of patients at the same time," due to a large number of dedicated intensive care units and repurposing military facilities to increase capacity.

Germany has had plenty of coronavirus patients—more than 100,000 laboratory-confirmed infections—but their death rate is remarkably low compared to neighboring countries. Experts attribute this to extensive and widespread testing, a trusted government, social distancing, and plenty of hospital care available if needed. Their capacity is so great that the country is now taking in patients from Italy, Spain, and France. As a result, the curve is beginning to flatten in Germany.

In the midst of the COVID19 outbreak, Germany has maintained one of the lowest rates of death at just 0.9%. While also one of the countries worst affected by it, both of those numbers are because of its widespread testing. The more people being tested, the more they’ve identified milder cases, which has effectively lowered the rate of fatality.

Compared to its European counterparts, Germany has one of the lowest coronavirus fatality rates, around 0.5%. Experts credit the low rate to the country's decentralized diagnostic systems that allow federal states to make their own decisions about testing. The country has averaged about 120,000 tests a week since late February.
