1. What kind of resources are currently out there to help homeless people get off the streets?
2. How does unemployment and failing to find a job tie into homelessness rates?
3. Is there something we are failing to think of to help the homeless get jobs?
4. What can we do/what are some ways we can heighten employment rates and lower homeless rates?
5. Are tiny homes/communities more beneficial than a shelter?
6. Are there other tiny homes/communities and programs out there that are similar to Second Winds? If so, where are they?
Notes for the stories
- Another great idea that is comparable to opening shleter's. I think an area for homeless people to live in tents or cars would be perfect as long as its maintained sort of like a shelter and there are opportunities/programs available there or in the nearby area to assist with getting people on their feet. (City officials suddenly support homeless tent cities, car camps in Sacramento neighborhoods)
- Sad to see the homeless criminalized by a system that knows they cannot afford it, especially multiple times in a row. But after reading on, it was good to see that she was able to help start turn her life around with the program that she was forced to attend rather than going to jail. (Community courts and the homeless: Do these programs make a difference?)
- Very controversial topic, and it is also sad to see the fraction of numbers of homeless people that have been in trouble with the law. In my opinion much more needs to be done about the topic of dealing with crime and homelessness. Maybe a whole new institution/system would be nice.. (Criminalizing Homeless)
- I think its super amazing to see Denver doing this and helping people like Brett. 12-13 dollars an hour is not the worst, not the best, but it's a start. I also like how they are finding odd jobs around the city to be done, thus making the city cleaner. (Denver Pays Homeless Residents to Help Clean Up the City)
- Never heard of this program before but they seem to be pretty big considering they have helped over 700,000 homeless people turn their lives around before. Based on their story, I like how they do help people from all different backgrounds and walks of life, supplying equal opportunity. (Fighting Poverty With Jobs)
- different perspective on how a different country deals with and treats homelessness. Their methods of homes/apartments for the homeless has proven to work. (Finland ends homelessness and provides shelter for all in need)
- This story proves that not all systems intended to help the homeless are successful. Rather than helping the homeless, they ended up with more citations. The biggest takaway from this story is that we need to be really careful in our programs when we design them although we have good intentions. (Hawaii Homeless Program Failed After Prosecutors And Police Wouldn't Play Ball)
- This is a cool amenity to have that slowly helps solve the problem of homelessness while its still a big problem. It's not like homelessness will just disappear any time soon so this is a good idea to me. I think these would really succeed around areas where homeless camps are allowed (as seen in my other saved stories in this collection). (Mobile showers come to Berkeley, providing the homeless with a new place to get clean)
- Interesting to see how New York handles homelessness during the winter and how cuomo deals with it. Also cool to see how Syracuse does not follow these laws because they do not want to criminalize the homeless, which I agree as well. I like this story because one of second winds biggest things is to get the homeless out of the cold. (Street outreach programs in Syracuse work to combat homelessness, especially in winter months)
- Living in a car is a much cheaper alternative than buying a house. Only thing you really have to pay for is insurance and gas vs rent (which is far more expensive). Only problem is that living in cars is illegal in some places and not normalized. Good to see progress and actions being taken to help living in more cars are more viable option to the homeless or anyone of low-income. (The People Who Live in Their Cars)
- Vienna seems to have the right idea. The thing I noticed most in this story, is rather than more time and money being put into solving homelessness, there is more put into things that bring everyone together that eliminate homelessness. Really cool and seems really successful. (The city that solved homelessness)
- Shocking how many homeless people end up in hospitals and how often. These homes seem to be cheaper than the Second Wind homes. The community seems to really like it and cant wait for more. (Tiny House ‘Villages' for People Experiencing Homelessness Spreading Across the Country)
-

200 tiny homes!!!!

Tiny house movement

Upstate New York as well

reinforces the fact that although tax dollars are being used for shelters etc. but homelessness is still a huge problem. We need new solutions.

. (Tiny Houses: A Big Idea to End Homelessness)
- This is the same idea/path as the tiny homes. Just on a smaller budget and scale. It would be cool if somehow they could combine both programs and have more official camps in towns that plan on building tiny homes in the future. But I like the concept a lot and its much better than nothing. (To address the homelessness crisis, some cities look to formal camps. Should ours?)
- More of a heartwarming story, not a permanent fix. But it makes me think of an idea- what if abandoned hotels/motels were transformed into these programs for the homeless? Im sure its already been done but it could be structured around programs like the Second Wind one. (Westside Hotel Gives Cleveland's Homeless a Place to Rest Their Heads During The Coronavirus Pandemic)
